The importance of your mental health should not be overlooked when trying to manage your physical health.

One of the reasons I was drawn to work in the field of mental health has to do with my own experience of struggling with type 1 diabetes since my diagnosis at the age of 11 years old. I finally found the support I needed in working with a naturopathic doctor who had type 1 diabetes herself and emphasized the importance of mental health in holistic well-being. For the first time in my life I felt that someone truly understood what I was going through and gave me the tools I needed to succeed.

Whether you’ve been living with type 1 diabetes all your life, or you were just diagnosed, you know that diabetes management impacts your day-to-day life in countless ways. You’re doing the work for your pancreas—which is no small feat! You have to count carbohydrates whenever you eat and worry about blood sugar fluctuations at all times and the costs of managing your disease in ways that many people around you might not. Transitioning into this routine, or even maintaining it after many years, can take a toll—and there’s no shame in getting some help! - JDRF

It is not uncommon for individuals and their families managing such a chronic health issue to experience burnout, depression and anxiety.
